Moderator: Anthony Williams, Partner, Wyrick Robbins Yates & Ponton LLP
Anthony Williams is a partner with Wyrick Robbins Yates & Ponton LLP in Raleigh, NC. Anthony’s practice focuses on venture capital financings, mergers and acquisitions and other strategic transactions for technology-intensive companies in the biotechnology, medical device, Internet and computer hardware and software industries. Anthony advises emerging growth companies at all stages, from start-up through initial public offering. Anthony received his B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his J.D. and M.B.A. from Wake Forest University.
Panelist: Garheng Kong, Ph.D., M.D., General Partner, Intersouth Partners
Garheng Kong, General Partner, joined Intersouth Partners in 2000. He has board involvement with most of Intersouth’s life science companies. Garheng has full-cycle investing experience, successfully sourcing, syndicating, managing and exiting investments. He has also served as interim CEO for two Intersouth portfolio companies. Prior to Intersouth, Garheng worked at GlaxoWellcome and McKinsey & Company. Garheng received his M.D., Ph.D. (Biomedical Engineering) and MBA from Duke University—graduating at the top of his medical and business school classes. He also holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and a B.S. in Biological Sciences from Stanford University. He is active in the community and currently serves on the board of directors of the North Carolina Medical Device Organization, the SEBIO organization, the Corporate Chaplains of America and has served on the Duke University Medical Center Institutional Review Board. Garheng is on faculty at the Duke School of Business as a Senior Scholar.

Panelist: Douglas Reed, M.D., General Partner, Hatteras Venture Partners
Douglas Reed, M.D. is a General Partner at Hatteras Venture Partners, an early-stage life sciences and healthcare venture investment fund based in Durham, NC. The fund is focused on starting companies in the southeastern US but will also invest in early-stage companies nationally. Prior to Hatteras, Doug has been a managing director at Vector Fund Management and a partner at S.R. One, both healthcare specific venture funds. In addition, he served as Vice President of Business Development in two publicly-traded biotechnology companies, NPS Pharmaceuticals and GelTex. He currently serves as a director of CGI Pharmaceuticals, Digirad and Viamet Pharmaceuticals. Doug received a BA in biology and an M.D. from the University of Missouri and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a board certified neuroradiologist and has held faculty positions in the Department of Radiology at the University of Washington and at Yale.
Panelist: Robert J. Schotzinger, M.D., Ph.D., President & CEO, Viamet Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
Prior to joining Viamet, Dr. Schotzinger was President and CEO of BioStratum Inc., a privately held biotechnology company. While at BioStratum, Dr. Schotzinger raised over $20 million in private equity financing, achieved over $5 million in milestone payments, completed several key partnerships and was responsible for moving the company’s lead drug candidate from phase I to phase 3. Previously, Dr. Schotzinger held positions at Abbott Laboratories, including Director of International Medical Affairs and Vice President of Drug Development. While at Abbott, he gained experience in preclinical and clinical drug development and was involved in the development and/or approval of multiple products, including Biaxin XL, Norvir, Kaletra, Leupron 3 month depot and Abbokinase. He was also responsible for the filing and approval of multiple SNDAs, ANDAs and INDs. As a member of Abbott’s Corporate Licensing team, Dr. Schotzinger was also involved in the licensing of several successful products, including Synagis, Tricor, Mobic and Avonex.
